Actor Leslie Odom Jr. says statues should be erected to “inspire us,” to “teach us,” and to “give us hope,” but if they no longer do so, communities can decide that they don’t want them anymore — even when it comes to statues of America’s Founding Fathers.
I agree, and I believe that glorifying another white, slave-owning, founding father is just as damaging as any confederate statue.
I know it’s probably difficult for Leslie Odom Jr. to give up a good paying role in a highly regarded musical on Broadway, but he must quit and encourage his co-stars to do the same.
There is already a small group of protesters that are planning to protest the musical starting this weekend. We should all be supporting their noble cause as best we can.
